The Association between Working Condition with Depression among Wage Workers

Abstract
n South Korea, the working hours of employees are the second longest among the OECD member countries, and the gap of working condition between regular and irregular workers is large. A lot of researches have been conducted on the association between shift work and cardiovascular disease or metabolic diseases. Relatively, there is a lack of research on the relationship between working conditions and mental health.
This study aimed to analyze the effect of working conditions on the depression of wage workers. In order to consider the gender difference, we divided men and women into two groups. We used the fourth(2014) Korean Working Condition Survey data. The subjects were 36,614 wage workers. For the detailed analysis, 2,771 wage workers who performed both night work and long working hours were extracted as a subgroup. Depression was measured using WHO-5 scale. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used for the analysis.
The results of this study are as follows. Incidence of suspicious depression had increased in male wage workers who work at night and for long working hours. Men working more than 68 hours/week and women working more than 52 hours/week showed increased incidence of suspicious depression compared to wage workers working 40 hours/week. Incidence of suspicious depression were increased in both men and women when they worked part time. As a result of detailed analysis of workers who work at night and for long hours, it was found that unstable employment conditions such as part time work had a greater impact on incidence of suspicious depression for women. Therefore, the specific efforts should be made to ensure that working hours per week do not exceed 52 hours.
It is necessary to take measures against female workers who work night and long hours under unstable employment conditions.
